Shelter Appreciation Week

Did you know this week is “Shelter Appreciation Week”?

All of us here at A.P.E. want to say thank you to our area shelters and the animals they help!

Like Delilah, from the Calhoun County Canine Shelter (CCCS).

Delilah and her sisters were often seen as very young kittens out in a yard. Their heads hung low, indicating they did not feel well.  After the owner agree to surrender them to the local Animal Control, they were taken in and treated for many parasites.  Finally well enough, they were spayed at an A.P.E. clinic and adopted via CCCS.  They are now three years old and thriving!

Dewey & Buzz

We will never forget our friends Dewey and Buzz – kittens from a CatSNAP home (a low income spay/neuter assistance program.)  Their moma cat  was fixed and returned to owner.  These kittens were fostered  through Hamilton County Animal Advocates (HCAA) and adopted out.

Hamilton County Animal Advocates has also been doing several Trap-Neuter-Return events in their area as well!  Great job HCAA!

Of course there were some dog friends.  From H.E.A.R.T. in Eldora, IA, there was Mocha, Bug, and Jasper.

Mocha, is a three year old miniature poodle-cairn terrier mix.  Mocha came to their shelter unaltered. He was given  up due to dominance issues and “lifting his leg” (peeing) in the house. He is a sweet boy, a little shy, but great with kids, and once altered, he had no issues.

Bug, a bottle baby Shih Tzu mix, came to their shelter as a one year old dog, unaltered, and with high energy.  He is described by his foster home as an absolute lover!!  The family had given him up due to being gone over twelve hours a day.  He was left outside alone while they were gone, often loose.

Jasper from HEART

Jasper came in as a three year old Daschund mix.  He was unaltered, and was picked on by the older dogs in his home.  He would bark and bite at new people. However, he loved baby pigs!!  His foster home described him as a sweet boy. Once altered, his “stranger danger” decreased.

All three of these HEART dogs have been adopted and are now very spoiled.

A huge thank you, to all of you, and all of the other shelters here in Iowa and elsewhere. Like Manhattan, New York!

What???!!?  Manhattan, New York!?  Yup, I got a call from Manhattan last week!  Igor, my Ukrainian exchange student son called.  He is here in the USA applying for a Green Card the legal way, but that is a whole other story.  Anyway, Igor, his wife, and some friends found an injured bird.  Wondering what to do with this bird, and to get it to safety was a bit puzzling, then Igor had an idea!  I’ll call my American Mom she’ll know what to do!

After a bit of Googling we found out that in Manhattan to reach Animal Control Field Services all you have to do is call 311.  Sure enough, the person answering had a number for a wildlife rehabilitation center.  They were closed for the evening but still answered the phone, and met Igor with the bird the next day.  The bird was said to be doing well when it was dropped off.  Thus, another happy ending!

Again, a big thank you to all of the shelters helping animals!

By giving to A.P.E. you are not only helping our shelter animals, but other shelter animals here in Iowa that use our low cost clinics.

Donations are tax deductible.
